A Complete Approach To Bollard Inspection And Maintenance

Across the industry, there is a growing focus on not just testing bollards, but maintaining them to a consistent, auditable standard.

Many ports and harbours are now adopting a full lifecycle approach to bollard management. This process typically includes surface preparation, corrosion removal, repair, and reapplication of protective coatings. Along with scheduled load testing, this ensures that bollards remain safe, visible, and fit for purpose over the long term.

At Bollard Proof we offer this complete suite of services alongside our testing capability, giving clients a single, streamlined solution.

Our process begins with thorough surface preparation. Bollards are jet washed and mechanically treated using needle guns to remove corrosion and heavy rust deposits. Where required, abrasive blast cleaning is carried out to achieve a clean, and as uniform surface as possible, ready for re-coating.

We then assess the condition of the steel using electronic thickness measurement, allowing us to quantify any material loss and provide clear, evidence-based reporting on structural integrity.

Once prepared, bollards are protected using a marine-grade anti-corrosion primer, followed by the application of a two-pack marine grade glass flake epoxy coating. This system provides high durability and excellent resistance to abrasion in harsh marine environments.

For asset management and visibility, each bollard can also be clearly marked with a stencilled identification number, applied to both the top and front faces.

If deterioration at the base has occurred, we also carry out localised repairs. This includes the removal and reinstatement of surrounding concrete, exposing the steel to an appropriate depth and reinstating with a suitable cementitious grout to ensure long-term stability.

These services can be delivered as a standalone maintenance package or combined with our proven bollard testing methods, depending on client requirements.

The result is a fully integrated approach, helping port operators not only verify performance, but actively extend the lifespan of their mooring infrastructure.
